Update on Main Street Project
Works are currently progressing on upgrading the pavements in front of 1, 2, 3 Main Street, which the public will be aware was a concrete surface.
Whilst breaking out the existing concrete pavement, historical pavers were uncovered. Contact was immediately made with the St Helena National Trust, the Museum and SHG’s Chief Engineer, so that a photographic record could be made and options discussed regarding how works should be further progressed.
With the agreement of these parties and the Chief Planning Officer, an attempt was made to incorporate the original pavers as a historical feature in front of the new hotel. Unfortunately, however the initial section relaid presented an uneven surface which was deemed unsafe by modern safety standards. It was therefore agreed that works should continue on the original basis and that the historical flagstones should be taken into care and custody by the St Helena National Trust. It should however be noted that original curb stones were also uncovered and these will be retained as a part of the Main Street pavements as in other areas.
This has caused a slight delay to the anticipated completion date for the works, however every effort is being made to minimise disruption.
